Is Using Scent on Lures Cheating? (Hint: It’s Not)

If you’ve ever stood there, casting the same lure at the same patch of water thinking, “I know they’re here, why won’t they bite?”  you’re not alone. And you’re not out of options either. That’s where scent comes in. Conveniently bottled, and super easy to apply, a few drops of the right stuff can turn a “maybe” into a solid hook-up.

Some anglers call it cheating. We call it fishing smart.

Let’s talk about what scent is, when you should use it, what some of the best scents are, and if using scents on lures actually works.

Too much? Maybe… but you get the point!

What is Scent on Lures?

Scent products are exactly what they sound like: they’re scents that act as attractants – they make your lure smell like the very thing it’s imitating. Whether it’s prawn, pilchard, bloodworm, or garlic-infused goo, the scents are designed to mimic the natural smell of bait. You rub it on your soft plastics, hardbodies, vibes, even jigs. Fish use their nose way more than you might think, and scent taps straight into that instinct.

When Should You Use Scent?

You don’t need scent every time you go out. But there are moments when it really shines. Here is the best time to use a lure scent:

  • Slow bites: When the fish are there but just not keen
  • Cold water: Fish metabolism slows and they get picky
  • Clear water: Where fish get more time to inspect your presentation
  • High-pressure days: After a run of good weather or lots of boat traffic

Glassy calm days, when the fishing is tough – a great time to put on scent.

In these conditions, fish can get extra cautious. A realistic smell gives your lure an edge and encourages that final commitment.

Common Lure Scents

There are loads of options out there, but a few standouts for Aussie fishing include:

  • Pro-Cure: Widely loved. Comes in a range of profiles like pilchard, mullet, shrimp
  • S-Factor: Popular among estuary and inshore fishos. Sticky and long-lasting
  • Mr Seng’s Scent: A newer product that’s been working really well, especially on snapper and flathead
  • Berkley Gulp: Gulp is a tried and proven formula for many fish over the years.

Some anglers even swear by applying real bait juice, like rubbing your lure in crushed pilchards or dipping in tuna oil. It’s rough and messy, but it works.

Do Lure Scents Actually Work?

Think of scent like chicken salt on hot chips. Hot chips are already good, no questions asked. But if you add some chicken salt on top? Next level. Lures already look the part. But with scent, now they smell the part too. When fishing, it’s all about stacking the odds in your favour, and using a scent on your lure might just be the thing to push the fish over the edge.

So – does lure scent work? Yes. But not like a switch you flick on. It doesn’t mean every cast gets hit, but it can mean more confident bites. Fish hold onto the lure longer, giving you time to set the hook. You’ll notice fewer missed taps and more committed strikes.

Many tournament anglers quietly use scent as part of their toolkit. And while you might not always see it in action, chances are it’s playing a behind-the-scenes role in a lot of fish getting landed.

It won’t suddenly make bad technique or the wrong lure colour work miracles, but it can be the deciding factor when fish are being stubborn. Sometimes a fish will follow, sniff, hesitate… then swim off. But when there’s scent in the mix, that hesitation becomes a strike.

Final Thoughts: Keep It in the Kit

Using scent isn’t cheating. It’s smart fishing. It’s just another tool in your tackle box, like the right jighead weight or colour choice. When used at the right time, it turns a good lure into a great one.

So next time the bite shuts down, or you’re trying to convert a follower into a hook-up, give scent a go. You don’t have to use it every cast, but you’ll be glad you’ve got it when it counts

Snapper are one of many fish that LOVE a scented lure.
